Fundamentally, I believe that therapy is about living intentionally. Much of our suffering comes from our unconscious habits — mental and behavioural patterns that we repeat over and over again, often with little awareness that we are doing them. My first goal as a therapist is to help my clients become aware of these patterns; the second step is working toward altering them in a collaborative, diligent, and systematic way. By doing this, we become more effective people, suffer less, and are better able to move toward the life that we envision for ourselves.
My expertise in therapy comes from three things: my academic learning, my experience as a clinician, and my experience in therapy myself. Before completing my MSW, I did a research master’s and worked in labs that studied mother-child attachment, the psychological effects of living with chronic disease, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Since my MSW, I have worked with individuals with criminal charges, men working on their fathering, adolescents suffering from depression, and I spent over five years working in an inpatient addictions and mental health treatment centre, encountering many forms of acute mental distress. In addition to my Master’s in Counselling Psychology, I have training and achieved certifications in healing trauma and addiction through EMDR, EFT, mindfulness based self-compassion, and somatic healing. Through my training, yoga practice, mindfulness education, and lived experience, I have cultivated a diverse skill set using various therapeutic modalities, including Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR and Somatic practices such as yoga, meditation and breath work.
First and foremost I believe in creating a safe, empathetic and non-judgmental environment where clients feel free to explore their thoughts and emotions.
